What is Femoroacetabular Impingement?

FAI occurs when the femoral head (ball) and acetabulum (socket) have an abnormal shape — cam (ball), pincer (socket), or combined — causing them to pinch during hip flexion. This leads to labral tears, cartilage damage, and eventual osteoarthritis.

Common in athletes, dancers, and young active adults. MRI arthrography is the gold standard for labral assessment. Hip arthroscopy corrects the bone deformity and repairs the labrum through 2–3 small keyhole incisions.

Key Facts
  • Groin pain with hip flexion (squatting, cycling, sitting) is the hallmark symptom
  • Cam impingement is more common in young male athletes
  • Pincer impingement is more common in active middle-aged women
  • Early treatment prevents labral and cartilage damage progressing to arthritis

Treatment Options

Restoring Hip Function — Arthroscopy & Beyond

01

Physiotherapy & Activity Modification

Core stability, hip external rotation strengthening, and movement re-education reduce pain in many FAI patients without surgery.

02

Intra-articular Injection

Ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection provides diagnostic confirmation and short-term relief while planning definitive treatment.

03

Hip Arthroscopy — Osteochondroplasty

Keyhole correction of cam and/or pincer deformity under arthroscopic guidance — restores normal ball-socket contact and relieves impingement.

04

Labral Repair / Reconstruction

Torn labrum is repaired with suture anchors or reconstructed with iliotibial band graft — restoring the hip's pressure-distributing seal.
