How to Choose a Spine Surgeon in Istanbul: 7 Key Questions

NEProf. Dr. Nurullah Ermiş·14 April 2025

Why Surgeon Selection Matters More Than Country Selection

The decision to travel abroad for spine surgery is significant. But arguably the most important decision — more than which country or hospital — is which individual surgeon will operate on your spine. Spine surgery outcomes are highly surgeon-dependent. The same procedure can yield dramatically different results depending on training, volume, technique, and judgement.

Turkey and Istanbul have excellent spine surgeons, but quality varies just as it does in the UK, Germany, or the US. This guide gives you the tools to identify the right surgeon for your specific condition.

The right question is not which country — it is which surgeon. Volume, training, and transparency matter far more than geography.

Question 1: What Is Your Annual Volume for This Specific Procedure?

Surgical volume is one of the strongest predictors of outcome. A surgeon who performs 150 lumbar fusions per year will almost always achieve better results than one performing 15. Ask specifically about the procedure you need — not just "spine surgery" in general.

At Central Hospital, our spine team collectively performs over 800 spinal procedures per year, with individual surgeons specialising in deformity, minimally invasive techniques, or cervical surgery.

Question 2: Where Did You Train, and Do You Hold Any International Fellowships?

Verify that the surgeon completed specialty training through a recognised programme (Turkish Board of Orthopaedic Surgery or Neurosurgery). International fellowship training — particularly at NASS-affiliated centres, EuroSpine, or AO Spine centres — significantly raises the bar. Ask for specific institutions and duration.

Question 3: What Technology Do You Use, and Is It Available at This Hospital?

Modern spine surgery relies heavily on technology. Key capabilities to evaluate:

  • Intraoperative imaging: O-arm (360° CT-quality imaging) or at minimum C-arm fluoroscopy for pedicle screw verification.
  • Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM): Continuous monitoring by a dedicated neurophysiologist. Essential for deformity, tumour, and revision cases.
  • Navigation: Computer-assisted navigation for screw placement in complex deformity or minimally invasive cases.
  • Microscope or endoscope: For minimally invasive discectomy and decompression.

Question 4: What Implant Systems Do You Use?

For any fusion or instrumented procedure, ask which implant brand will be used. Recognised global brands include Stryker, DePuy Synthes, Globus Medical, NuVasive, and Medtronic. Avoid surgeons who cannot name a specific implant brand or who use locally manufactured implants without ISO/CE certification.

Question 5: What Is Your Complication Rate and How Do You Handle Complications?

No surgeon has a zero complication rate. An honest answer — citing specific rates for infection, dural tear, neurological deficit — is a green flag. Evasion is a red flag. More importantly, ask what happens if you develop a complication after returning home. Does the hospital have a remote complication protocol?

Question 6: Can I See Your Published Results or Institutional Data?

Top-tier spine surgeons contribute to peer-reviewed literature. Ask whether the surgeon or hospital publishes outcome data. Patient registries and published series on specific procedures are indicators of a quality-conscious unit.

Question 7: What Does Post-Operative Follow-Up Look Like for International Patients?

This is often where medical tourism arrangements break down. Before you travel, confirm:

  • How many post-op visits are included during your Istanbul stay?
  • Is a telehealth follow-up call scheduled at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months?
  • Will the surgeon communicate directly with your GP or local specialist after your return?
  • Is there a 24/7 WhatsApp or phone line for urgent post-op questions?

At Central Hospital, every international patient is assigned a dedicated coordinator who remains available throughout the entire care journey — from the first inquiry to the final post-operative consultation.
